Pharmacy Technicians

Legislation was passed in September, 2014 which authorized pharmacy technicians to become a regulated health profession. Registered pharmacy technicians play an important role with respect to the technical aspect of the practice of pharmacy and support pharmacists so they are able to provide more comprehensive patient care services to the public.

Pharmacy technician is a protected title, meaning only an individual who has met the requirements for registration as a pharmacy technician with the PEI College of Pharmacists, may use the title of pharmacy technician.  

What is the Scope of a Pharmacy Technician
A pharmacy technician may perform any of the following duties under the supervision of a pharmacist:
 
  • receive written prescription
  • gather, enter and store prescription and patient information
  • prepare and compound prescriptions
  • check a prescription for technical accuracy
  • dispense a prescription
  • store and repackage products
  • assist with inventory and systems for drug distribution
  • transfer and receive prescriptions from other pharmacies
  • teach patients about the use of devices
  • participate in research, development, implementation and evaluation of quality assurance and risk management policies and procedures
  • teach the practice of pharmacy technicians in educational institutions
  • act as a preceptor to a pharmacy technician students
