Registration as a Provisional Pharmacy Technician

Canadian Graduates – Requirements

Provisional registration allows new graduates an opportunity to practice to full scope, under the supervision of a preceptor, while completing the required post-graduate practice experience and awaiting results of PEBC examinations.

The requirements for Provisional Registration are set out in the Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician Regulations.

Unless otherwise specified, all documentation must be received by the PEI College of Pharmacy in its original form or as a notarized copy. Original documents may be presented to the PEI College of Pharmacy office to be copied by staff.

Proof of Identity

Applicants must submit either:

1. a copy of their passport or citizenship card, OR

2. their birth certificate and government-issued photo ID.

A notarized copy may be submitted by mail or the original may be presented to the PEICP office.

Graduation from an Accredited Pharmacy Technician Program or Pharmacy Degree

Applicants must submit proof of completion of a pharmacy technician program or pharmacy degree. Proof can be provided directly from the educational institution, by presenting the original diploma or degree to the PEICP office or by submitting a notarized copy by mail.

Professional Liability Insurance

The professional liability insurance policy must be in accordance with section 40 of the Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician Regulations.
The policy certificate may be uploaded to the applicant’s registrant profile. If the policy certificate is not immediately available, a paid receipt showing the expiry date of the policy and the policy amount is accepted in the interim.

Criminal Record Check

The PEI College of Pharmacy Criminal Record Check Policy requires that applicants submit the results of an Extended Police Information Check (EPIC) that has been completed within 3 months of application. An EPIC is valid for a period of 5 years once on file with the College providing there has not been a break in registration. At the discretion of the College, registrants may be selected to provide an additional EPIC before their expiration date.

The College has partnered with MyBackCheck.com to provide criminal record checks for registration with PEICP. Select the link below to request a record check.

Letters of Standing

Applicants are required to submit a letter of standing from all regulatory bodies where they have held registration. Please contact each regulatory body to request that the PEICP Letter of Standing form be completed and forwarded directly to the College office.

English Language Proficiency

Canadian graduates, who have completed their program in English, will have met the language proficiency requirements of the PEICP.

If an applicant has not completed their pharmacy program in English, they must meet current English language proficiency requirements as described in the PEI College of Pharmacy English Language Proficiency Requirements for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians. English language proficiency test results are valid for two years from the date of testing.

Preceptor and Site Approval

Canadian graduates are required to complete a period of post-graduate practice experience, under the supervision of a preceptor, in accordance with the Practice Experience Policy. Canadian graduates of an accredited pharmacy technician program are required to complete 280 hours of post-graduate practice experience. A pharmacist or a pharmacy technician may act as a preceptor to a provisional pharmacy technician.

Provisional registrants are responsible for securing a preceptor and completing the preceptor/site approval form (found in the applicant’s registrant profile.) The chosen preceptor will receive notification from the College and will agree to the practice experience placement. Applicants will be notified by PEICP when their preceptor and site has been approved.

Fees

Applicants will access a fee invoice through the registrant profile. Applications are not considered complete until all required documentation is received and fees are paid. Fees are non-refundable.

When the application has been processed, the applicant will receive e-mail notification of registration as a provisional pharmacy technician and the Structured Practical Training Program manual. The applicant may not commence practice until the registration confirmation has been received.
